National Academy of Osteopathy News

Our Deepest Sympathy February 2, 2012

The heartfelt condolences of National Academy of Osteopathy staff, faculty and students go out to Dr Shahin Pourgol and family for the passing of his father; Mr Ali Pourgol on January 24, 2012.

Mr Ali Pourgol (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pIW0-DMXjo); was the most well known English teacher in the city of Rasht in Iran, having taught 1000s of students in his 48 years of teaching career. Some of his students are now students of NAO as well. He was a self made man; losing his mother right after birth and his fatehr 8 years later. He was raised by relatives in the village of Kharat Mahale near Rasht; and later in the village of Galeshkheh (Gilan).
He never stopped educating himself. Walked 4 hours daily to get to school. Was first from his village to get accepted to the biggest university in Iran (University of Tehran). Became a teacher; then principal. Opened the first translation bureau in the province of Gilan; followed by the largest private school in Rasht. He then authored numerous books. He was offered the position of mayor in Rasht which he declined. His love and passion was teaching which he continued to the end.

Thousands attended his funeral in Rasht and thousands of his students across the world have sent their condolences. He is buried right next to the legendary Mirza Kochak Khan Jangali in Rasht.

May there be comfort in knowing that someone so special will never be forgotten. Rasht will not be the same without him.

Osteopathic Treatment Found to Release Antistress Hormone December 14, 2011

Oxytocin is a hormone released by the hypothalamus during breastfeeding and bounding experiences, such as hugging, kissing and social engagement. It creates a wide range of physiological, emotional & behavioural effects.

Oxytocin is a critical antistress agent, able to reduce social fears and anxiety and inhibit the brain's defensive fight-flight response.

Researchers have found dramatic positive changes in veterans with severe post-traumatic stress disorder who increased production of Oxytocin by natural means.

Osteopathic soft tissue therapy is one of the natural ways that can increase production of Oxytocin in the body. Interestingly Oxytocin was found to make people more extrovert and social as well.

Rest in Peace Jack Aug 23, 2011

Mr. Jack Layton; leader of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP) restored a measure of humanity to Canadian national politics. He will be missed.

My deepest condolences for his passing to his wife honorable Olivia Chow, member of parliament and the rest of his family. He made New Democratic Party the opposition federal party for the first time in Canadian history. This is amazing achievement and I think his personality was the main factor in this.

I admire people who achieve great results. He will forever be part of Canadian history. A life lived well. Farewell Jack.

Professor Shahin Pourgol Invited to Give Speech Aug 11, 2011

Professor Shahin Pourgol, alongside a number of other academicians, politicians, policy makers and businesspersons was invited to give a presentation in regards to the current economic crisis in the USA and Europe and how to prevent this in Canada.

Here is a short summary of what Professor Pourgol spoke about:

Canada was originally an ideal location for manufacturing goods as the raw materials were in great supply. The nation flourished, with an economy based on manufacturing.

After the end of the cold war; certain type of economic liberty was born in China. China’s economy was mainly based on farming. Due to correct economic decisions they got involved in manufacturing. Due to cheap labour; and some political manoeuvring in keeping their currency law; they made great fortunes. They did another smart decision. They lent this new found fortune to first world countries and in turn their received duty free, tax free export of their products. This made them the richest country in the world.

It is now impossible for Canada to compete with China in manufacturing. That is why most manufacturing jobs died down in Canada.

To remedy this Canada invested in information technology (IT). This was good as we became one of the best in the world. Unfortunately due to advancement of internet based technologies such as Voice Over Internet Protocols (VOIP); as well as cheap labour and their ability to speak English, India now surpassed us in IT. Most IT jobs are going to India.

I personally feel, the way for Canada to survive and prosper and keep the current level of high quality life is to invest in service based industries. I believe the future rests in service based small businesses. These are positions such as osteopaths, chiropractors, painters, plumbers, carpenters, physicians, dry cleaners, etc that cannot be outsourced to India. These positions will always be safe.

I also believe there should be a heavy tax levied on Canadian import products. This would force consumers to buy Canadian.

My last advice is for banks not to give mortgage to just anyone with a job who is interested in buying a house. Buying a house with 5% or less down payment is just not a good investment. People have to invest at least 25% in their homes. This alone would have prevented the house meltdown of the USA.

The above was the summary of Professor Pourgol's presentation. Professor Pourgol personally believes becoming a manual osteopath is the best thing individuals can do to secure their future. This is a skilled based profession that can be applied anywhere in the world. No matter where one practices osteopathy, there is always a demand. In Canada there is a one to two months waiting list to see an osteopath. In Iran the waiting list is six months!

Immigration to Canada for NAO International Students Aug 11, 2011

Having a Diploma in Manual Osteopathic Practice (DO(MP) can help you immigrate to Canada and become a Canadian permanent resident, leading to Canadian citizenship and a Canadian passport in 3 years following arrival in Canada.

National Academy of Osteopathy international graduates (non-Canadian) are eligible to obtain a license from International Osteopathic Association and practice in all Canadian provinces; including Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec and Alberta.

Osteopathy is a much in demand profession in Canada. As such high points are given by Citizenship & Immigration Canada to applicants who are osteopaths.

International NAO graduates from Iran, China, Taiwan, South Korea and other countries are able to apply under the Skilled Workers category of Citizenship & Immigration Canada. To start the process NAO international graduates need a job offer from an osteopathic clinic in Canada.

For international NAO graduates who are interested in immigrating to Canada and working here; NAO highly recommends immigration consulting services of Mr Sukanta Saha (lawyer) and Ms. Shirin Pourgol (paralegal) of Pourgol Paralegal services. Ms. Pourgol is one of the top immigration consultants in Canada and a member of the Upper Canada Law Society. She can be reached at immigration@pourgolparalegal.com.

Ms. Shirin Pourgol has an excellent business relationship with some of the biggest osteopathy clinics in Canada and as such is able to secure a guaranteed employment and job offer for international NAO graduates with an osteopathic clinic. Her immigration consulting services are guaranteed; meaning in the unlikely event she is unable to secure Canadian permanent residence status for any international NAO graduate; her consulting fee is returned to the applicant.

SPORTS OSTEOPATHY INSTRUCTIONAL DVD SERIES Aug 2, 2011

National Academy of Osteopathy has just completed production of the first instructional DVD in the Sports Osteopathy. The DVD is titled “Kick Faster in 5 Minutes”. This DVD is designed for martial artists and teaches practical techniques that can be practiced solo in 5 minutes per day to increase kicking speed by affecting the type IIb (fast twitch) muscle fibers.

National Academy of Osteopathy has accepted production of this vast project for two main reasons. The first being to introduce general public to the Osteopathic Sports Energy Technique (the only osteopathy technique created in Canada) and the second making sports osteopathy more popular.

While sports therapy is a big part of medicine and chiropractic; it is unfortunately not practiced widely in the manual osteopathy profession. NAO wants to change this. As such it is the only Canadian osteopathy college teaching sports osteopathy; as part of its curriculum.

Letter from Hon. Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario July 26, 2011

Dear Shahin,

Ontarians have always been builders, hard workers and focused on the future -- it's how we face our challenges.

Our most recent hurdle was the global recession. We got through it our way - The Ontario Way: with hard work and by building together. It wasn't easy, but today our province is back on track.

We're not going to slow down now. That's just not our way.

This past weekend, in a major public address, I outlined the six challenges Ontarians need to face head-on in the coming years. But to succeed we must do it together.

Ontario Liberals are different. We're not just out to win the coming election -- we're out to win the future for Ontario. Every day we're working hard to make Ontario stronger. We believe that if we face our challenges together, we will build a brighter future, together.

Please pass this letter on, and let people know that we are doing our part to build the Ontario you want for you, your children, and grandchildren.

Hon. Dalton McGuinty, MPP

Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party

Premier of Ontario

Using osteopathic S.E.T. athletes can achieve dramatic increase in speed often after the first session! They can run, kick, jump or punch faster often after doing the first set of S.E.T. techniques.

Study Finds Soft Tissue Therapy Best Choice for Chronic Back Pain July 6, 2011

A new study finds that patients with chronic low back pain who got a one-hour soft tissue therapy once a week, for 10 weeks, fared better than those receiving the usual medications for the nagging condition.

The research involved about 400 patients aged 20 to 65 with chronic lower back pain.

Daniel Cherkin of the Group Health Research Institute in Seattle, USA headed the research. Dr. Andrea Furlan of the Institute for Work & Health in Toronto says the findings are important, because if people with chronic low back pain can feel better quicker, they might be able to resume regular activities of daily life sooner.

The study is published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

“Soft tissue therapy is one of the most important techniques manual osteopaths use to treat neuromusculoskeletal & joints conditions and it is taught in detail at National Academy of Osteopathy. In fact NAO teaches more soft tissue therapy techniques than any other osteopathy college in Canada”; says Dr. Abazar Habibinia, MD; chair of the department of clinical sciences at National Academy of Osteopathy.

Need Partner to Expand Osteopathy to India June 9, 2011

India has changed its current education laws. Now foreign owned colleges and universities are permitted to open a location in India without partnering with a local Indian college or university.

As a matter of fact; the honourable Minister of Resources; Mr. Patel indicated that they are looking for additional 1000 universities and 45,000 colleges within the next few years to open up in India; and hoping that many of them would be foreign owned. York University is planning to open a school of business there. McMaster University as well as other Canadian Universities are looking into expanding to India as well.

India is a perfect location for business expansion the following reasons:

1) It is the largest democratic country in the world.
2) Population of more than 1 billion.
3) English speaking country.
4) Member of commonwealth countries.
5) Safe secure country. India has never started a war in its history.
6) Best tasting food ever!
7) Average income growth of 9% per year. Meaning every 10 years the population income doubles. This is one of the highest income growths of any nation.
8) Highly educated population. Most foreign students of North American and European universities are Indian.
9) India is making more millionaires every week that any other country in the world.
10) There is only one osteopathy college there.
11) India is set to become a superpower within the next few years.
12) Large wealthy population who can afford high tuition of foreign educational centres.

We are very interested to expand National Academy of Osteopathy there by opening a full campus. Unfortunately due to distance we are unable to do so; the same way we can in the Dominican Republic. We are looking for an individual who is interested in expanding osteopathy in India by partnering with National Academy of Osteopathy for this joint venture; and who is able to move permanently to India.

Please respond directly to Pourgol@pourgol.com if this is something that interests you. Please feel free to forward this news to anyone you feel might be interested in this business opportunity.

Thank you.

With the spring and the Iranian New Year just in the corner; I am happy to announce great news. The Ministry of Health in Taiwan has permitted National Academy of Osteopathy to offer the manual osteopathy program in Taiwan.

National Academy of Osteopathy registrar; Ms. Peggy Chiang is leaving for Taiwan for a ten days business trip tomorrow. She will be working on the logistics of expanding NAO to Taiwan.

Taiwan is a large island with a population of 23 millions. I am so excited to introduce manual osteopathy there. Very soon thousands of Taiwanese will have access to one of the best health professions in the world. NAO graduate manual osteopaths will decrease pain and improve function of countless Taiwanese. This is the best joy life. To produce healers who help people live better. There can be no better profession than this.

From its inception, NAO has provided leadership in scientific; evidence-based manual osteopathy education. Our proud traditions of academic and clinical excellence—preparing students for achievement and success—have always been at the core of what we do, and will always remain our highest priorities.

In keeping with our motto, “Clinically Based; Practice Oriented; Scientific Manual Osteopathic Education,” we complement basic and clinical sciences with the art of caring for people.

• NAO is well known as a leader in scientific manual osteopathy education. We only teach techniques that are effective and proven through evidence based research.

• At NAO we place heavy emphasis on business & clinical education. We prepare NAO graduates for the real world by teaching them business principles, including marketing, investment, & tax planning.

• NAO is the only osteopathy school in Canada offering training in physiotherapy modalities, orthotics, support hose, decompression therapy & clinical ergonomics.

• Because NAO graduates are expertly prepared to work in integrated care settings and to provide the highest quality patient care, they are the most likely to succeed in this new environment. We graduate successful manual osteopaths.

• Our manual osteopathy technique labs average approximately ten students to each professor (10:1). This kind of low student-faculty ratio assures you will confidently enter the manual osteopathy profession after graduation, prepared to provide the best treatment for your patients.

• NAO is approved by International Osteopathic Association (IOA) as an accredited manual osteopathy school. NAO students may join IOA upon graduation to receive certificate of registration.

• NAO graduates who are members of IOA may practice in most countries of the world; including Canada, USA, England, Australia, Iran, China, Brazil, India, Jamaica, Russia, Latvia, Ukraine, Poland, Taiwan, Philippines, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico, & Italy.

• NAO graduates are eligible to receive manual osteopathy malpractice insurance from Holman Insurance at a preferred rate.

• NAO is approved by Canadian Manual Osteopathy Examining Board (CMOEB). NAO graduates may sit for board exams upon graduation.

• NAO is affiliated with Union Ergonomics & Spinal Traction Clinic. With 57 franchises in this group; they are the #1 provider of ergonomic services to Canadian workers; the #1 provider of orthopaedic shoes to welfare recipients and the leader in providing affordable back pain relief through decompression traction therapy.

NAO is proud of the leadership and rich heritage it contributes to the manual osteopathy profession. The future of health care will focus on integrating disciplines, preparing competent professionals, providing effective care, and promoting health.

National Academy of Osteopathy will prepare students to fill the rapidly evolving role of the manual osteopath. I invite you to become part of our vision of manual osteopathy's growth and a future of serving patients in need of our unique healing art and science.
Please click on the link to see NAO students practicing manual osteopathy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hki2b-oGl0k. This is what our students are saying about their training at NAO:
"The National Academy of Osteopathy has been an excellent experience thus far! Hands down, this is the best practical training I have received. Dr. Pourgol does a great job demonstrating the techniques on each of the students so that we can experience the technique first hand and know what we are supposed to feel. This allows us to communicate with the other students to see how our technique compares to the instructors. I am really enjoying the program and I look forward to going into class each day! "
Kyle Perks
Full Time Student-Class of 2011

"...Dr. Pourgol's lectures and clinical classes are all based on his professional experience in this field. Our other professors are also on top of their medical fields. Their patience and dedication to every student is overwhelming. There will be a new generation of Manual Osteopaths coming from NAO and I strongly believe we are being trained to be the best in Canada and perhaps in the world."
Jay David
Part Time Student-Class of 2011

"...For me “NATIONAL ACADEMY OF OSTEOPATHY” is like following Gandhi’s word: “Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”
And after attending some classes, I feel, I made the right choice. I am happy to be part of this journey..."

I love my students. And I love teaching them. Sharing my clinical and business knowledge with them gives me so much joy and happiness.

Happy Persian New Year everyone!

Pourgol Family Coat of Arms March 7, 2011

Dear Friends:

In a special ceremony attended by a number of distinguished guests; the Pourgol family coat of arms was revealed yesterday. A coat of arms is a symbol or collection of symbols, usually represented on a shield, which indicates the traits of a particular person, family, corporation, or state.

Each item in a coat of arms has detailed symbolism attached to it. Here is the short symbolism behind each item in the Pourgol family coat of arms:

1) The two royal falcons represent me “Shahin” as the patriarch of Pourgol family in Canada protecting the family. The name Shahin in Farsi means “royal falcon”.

2) On the shield; on top and bottom and the middle are colors of green, red and white symbolizing Iran; where Pourgol family came from.

3) In the middle of the shield; five maple leave; symbolizing Canada; where Pourgol family resides and the five initial members of Pourgol clan in Canada.

4) My dog Snowy on the shield represents unconditional love. The love I have for all family and people around me.

5) The lion on the shield has two meaning. First is a symbol of Venice, Italy; where I proposed to the love of my life. She is the reason behind all my success. Because of her I am the happiest man alive. Second; it symbolizes my son.

6) The two books symbolize my father’s school, and my school (National Academy of Osteopathy), as well as the love my dad instilled in me for books; which is one of the reasons for my success.

7) The green leave on top symbolizes nature that I love so dearly. It also symbolizes the village of Foshtom, city of Rasht and the province of Gilan that are so green.

8) The vertebra on top symbolizes chiropractic & Osteopathy. Chiropractic directed me toward a career in health. Osteopathy directed me to share my knowledge with students. Inside the vertebra is the word “Shahin” in Farsi.

9) Dream Big. Take Action; at the bottom is my motto in life. It is what I believe and what has taken me to where I am.

10) The color green, orange, and blue represent Union Ergonomics, Spinal Traction Clinic and National Academy of Osteopathy. They are entities that allowed me to help my fellow Canadians by creating jobs and providing a better life for so many people while helping thousands of patients decrease their pain. These colors also represent Trees, sun and sea that I love so much.

11) The purple color on the shield symbolizes my best friend Devika; who is the best human being I have ever met. She has taught me a lot about the fine art of tranquility.

National Academy of Osteopathy Expanding to Iran & China March 2, 2011

We are very happy to report that after a lot of hard work, waiting and running around we have finally received approval from the Ministry of Health in Iran and China to offer the manual osteopathy program there. Once these are established; we will work on expanding to Brazil and India.

Our goal is to make National Academy of Osteopathy the largest college in the world. What osteopaths do, saves lives. For example; educating a patient in regards to osteoporosis would save their lives by making their bones stronger so when they fall, they do not break their bones. When a bone breaks in an elderly; it may cut the femoral artery and that is a leading cause of death in women above 60 years of age.

By expanding manual osteopathy internationally; we are saving lives and this is the greatest joy ever.

Monday was the first day of the full time manual osteopathy program at NAO. It was the first time Dr. Shahin Pourgol taught a class. When his lecture finished students rose & gave him standing ovation! It was an emotional moment for Dr. Pourgol.

Two New Certificate Programs by National Academy of Osteopathy Feb 22, 2011

We are very happy to announce National Academy of Osteopathy has added two new part time certificate programs which are:

1) Certified Fitter – Foot Orthotics
2) Certified Fitter – Support Hose

These programs lead to CFFO and CFSH certificates enabling manual osteopaths to dispense custom made foot orthotics and compression socks for their patients. Custom made foot orthotics and compression socks are effective medical devices that help many patients with foot and leg conditions.

NAO is the only osteopathy school in Canada offering these two courses.

First Physiotherapy Modalities Course for Osteopaths in Canada Feb 14, 2011

National Academy of Osteopathy (NAO) is revolutionizing manual osteopathy education in Canada by offering the only physiotherapy modalities course designed specifically for manual osteopaths.

Certain patients with acute pain and injury cannot tolerate hands on treatment. These patients are generally referred to physiotherapists or given anti-inflammatory (NSAID) and pain medications by family physicians. Thanks to the Auxiliary Osteopathy Therapy program of NAO; manual osteopaths can now provide physiotherapy modalities treatments (such as ultrasound, electrotherapy, thermotherapy, & Cryotherapy) to patients suffering from severe pain. Physiotherapy modalities decrease pain and inflammation and as a result prepare patients to receive manual treatments provided by osteopaths.

Successful graduates are eligible to use the designation Certified Electrotherapist (CET). This course is open to all students and practitioners of manual osteopathy.

For more information about this certificate program please contact NAO registrar at (416) 635-6550.

Union Ergonomics Joins Top 30 Franchises in Canada Jan 12, 2011

Franchise Canada Directory 2011 has just been published by Canadian Franchise Association and Union Ergonomics logo has been published as part of the top 30 franchises operating in Canada, in the inside cover section of the magazine. This magazine is available for purchase at Chapters, Indigo and other stores across Canada.
This is quite an achievement for our young franchise system when it is placed alongside such giant multinational franchises as: McDonald’s, The UPS Store; Swiss Chalet, Harvey’s, Montana’s Cookhouse, Petvalue, Kelsey’s, Country Style and Certigard.

Union Ergonomics has achieved this status by offering an amazing income potential. Even though the majority of its franchisees are operating less than a year; most have already billed (for services & supplies provided to workers and patients on social assistance); more than they paid to purchase their franchise clinics! And they have done so by keeping their clinics open only 12 hours per week!

Some of our franchisees even billed more than their purchase price of $200,000 in less than four months of practice! This is an extraordinary development. Such income potential is unheard of in the Canadian franchise industry.

We congratulate all Union Ergonomics franchisees and their employees as well as all head office employees who together made this possible.

Thank you everyone for making us a success story.

Welfare Recipients & Patients on LTD Covered Now For Orthopaedic Braces Jan 12, 2011

We are very excited to announce Union Ergonomics can now provide certain orthopaedic braces to patients on social assistance and long term disability (LTD). Until now welfare recipients and patients on long term disability were eligible only for orthopaedic shoes and custom made foot orthotics in Union Ergonomics franchise clinics. As a matter of fact Union Ergonomics has become the number one provider of orthopaedic shoes and custom made foot orthotics to welfare recipients in the province of Ontario in 2010. There is currently a three months waiting list for these patients to be seen by our foot specialists.

We want to thank Ministry of Community and Social Services for allowing certain orthopaedic braces to be covered for these patients. These orthopaedic braces would drastically improve quality of life in these patients. They are greatly beneficial in managing certain health conditions by decreasing pain and improving function.

Area Developers Wanted Dec 21, 2010

We are planning to make Union Ergonomics and Spinal Traction Clinic the fastest growing new franchises in the world in 2011 so all people everywhere could have access to our unique ergonomic services as well as affordable low back pain relief through decompression therapy.

As such we are looking for qualified area developers to join us by owning and operating a Union Ergonomics – Spinal Traction Clinic combined centre in a new city where we do not have a presence.

The normal purchase price for a combo unit of UE-STC centre is $360,000. We are offering this combo unit at an amazingly low price of $150,000 to only one qualified area developer per city.

There is a saving of $210,000 per combo unit. In turn the area developer helps us expand in that particular city by acting as our agent.

This offer only applies to the first clinic in each town. We believe once we have a clinic in any town we will be able to help many patients in that area and achieve our goal of making our unique ergonomic services available to workers everywhere nationally and internationally.

I would appreciate if you forward this email to all your friends so everyone could know about this amazing business opportunity. Anyone interested should contact our chief marketing officer; Mr. Tito Goswami for more info at cmo@unionergonomics.com or sales@spinaltractionclinic.com .

Today was our last day of work this year. We will open on Tuesday; January 04th, 2011 at 9AM.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

NAO Chosen by Spinal Traction Clinic to Provide Training Aug 7, 2010

Dr. Shawn Pourgol, founder and president of National Academy of Osteopathy (NAO) has just founded a new project: Spinal Traction Clinic (STC) franchise (managed by Union Ergonomics; Canada’s fastest growing new franchise (40 franchises across North America), & #1 provider of orthopaedic shoes to welfare recipients in Ontario as well as being the #1 provider of ergonomic services to Canadian workers).

Decompression traction therapy is one of the most successful modalities available for low back pain. Most clinics charge $150 to $300 per treatment session. This makes it hard for majority of people to use this machine.

STC (www.spinaltractionclinic.com) is offering decompression traction therapy at $20 per session. Because of STC; this machine is now available to all patients. Everyone can afford this therapy now. Low back pain relief has never been so affordable.

To have all patients everywhere have access to decompression traction therapy Dr Pourgol has decided to franchise this clinic. This is a revolutionary franchise concept as Spinal Traction Clinic franchisees do not pay any operating expenses. All expenses; such as rent, staff salary, advertising & marketing costs, phone, fax, equipments, supplies, etc. will be paid by Spinal Traction Clinic.

National Academy of Osteopathy has been chosen to provide the Decompression Traction Assistant Program to Spinal Traction Clinic franchisees. The franchisee; upon completion of the two weeks program are entitled to use the title: Certified Decompression Traction Assistant (CDTA) and may assist STC health practitioners (manual osteopath, chiropractor or physiotherapist) in traction therapy.

National Academy of Osteopathy graduates may also find employment as manual osteopaths in Spinal Traction Clinics or Union Ergonomics franchise clinics.

Decompression Traction Assistant Program Aug 6, 2010

DTA428 Certified Decompression Traction Assistant

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Traction Therapy is a low back rehabilitation program that uses Food & Drug Administration (FDA) cleared medical technology that gently stretches the spine and decompresses the discs. This technique of spinal decompression traction therapy, that is, unloading due to distraction and positioning, has shown the ability to gently separate the vertebrae from each other, creating a vacuum inside the discs. This "vacuum effect" is also known as negative intradiscal pressure.

The negative pressure can induce the retraction of the herniated or bulging disc into the inside of the disc, and off the nerve root, thecal sac, or both. It happens only microscopically each time, but cumulatively, over six to eight weeks, the results are quite dramatic.

The cycles of decompression and partial relaxation over a series of visits, promotes the diffusion of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids from the outside of the discs to the inside. These nutrients enable the torn and degenerated disc fibres to begin to heal.

Patients are treated fully clothed and are fitted with a pelvic harness that fits around their pelvis as well as a thoracic harness as they lie face down or face up on a computerized controlled table. The Spinal Traction Clinic health practitioner operates the table from a computerized console. Each treatment takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Most patients find the sessions to be comfortable, and relief of pain can sometimes be noticed in the first few sessions. Of course, this varies depending on the individual condition.

Decompression traction therapy is provided by a licensed chiropractor, osteopath or physiotherapist. Certified decompression traction assistants main duty involves setting the patient on the decompression table and programming the computer as ordered by the health practitioners.

Through this program students learn how to operate the decompression traction table, and how to set up the patient on the table as per health practitioner's requirement. Students also learn basic medical terminology, basic anatomy and basic spinal pathology.

Upon graduation Certified Decompression Traction Assistants find employment in rehabilitation, chiropractic, osteopathy, massage therapy, physiotherapy, & medical clinics as well as hospitals and long term care centres.
